Uber to let parents livestream teen rides via driver selfie camera
The livestream will be tested in nine US markets and roll out nationwide over the coming weeks, with streaming running in the background and auto-pausing if device performance or connectivity is unstable.
Uber Technologies is rolling out a new safety feature for its teen ride product that lets authorized parents or guardians view a video livestream of a teen’s trip in the Uber app.
The livestream is captured using the selfie camera on the driver’s phone, and both the teen and the driver are alerted when a parent tunes in. Uber said only adults linked to the teen account can view during an active trip, and the footage will not be accessible to the driver, guardian, or teen after the trip ends.
The feature uses background live video streaming that adapts to the driver’s device, with the app monitoring battery, device temperature, and performance. Uber said it will pause the stream automatically if needed, including when the driver’s connection is unstable.
Uber is announcing the livestream capability during back-to-school season and said it will roll out nationwide over the coming weeks after testing in nine US markets: Atlanta, Phoenix, Orlando, San Antonio, Cleveland, El Paso, Texas, Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, Portland, Oregon, and Rhode Island.
