China urged to use human translators to refine AI political messaging
A state-affiliated academic newspaper warned that literal AI translations could make Beijing’s policies appear more threatening abroad.
China is being urged to use human translators to refine how AI renders the country’s political messaging for overseas audiences, amid concern that literal translations may be interpreted as more threatening than intended. According to an article published in Chinese Social Sciences Today, a newspaper run by the Beijing-based Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China should strengthen its translation capacity and add safeguards against distortions from AI-generated translations so that its policies and intentions are understood more accurately overseas. The article quotes Li Yan, a professor at Xian Fanyi University, arguing that human translators should work alongside AI as the technology takes on more of the translation work.
