Dormant Bitcoin wallets last active since 2011 move $40 million
Galaxy Research data shows dormant bitcoin activity hit its lowest level since 2022, with 2026 on pace for less than half as much dormant movement as last year.
Six long-dormant Bitcoin wallets that were last active between 2011 and 2014 moved a combined 553.59 BTC, worth about $40 million, between Aug. 16 and Aug. 26, according to data tracked by Galaxy Research and summarized by CoinDesk.
CoinDesk reported that dormant activity fell in the second quarter to its lowest level since 2022. Galaxy defines coins as dormant when they remain at the same address for at least a year, and the article noted that wallet movements do not necessarily indicate sales.
Five of the six wallets sent bitcoin to addresses with no known exchange links, while one transferred 40 BTC to Boerse Stuttgart Digital, a German crypto custody and trading provider. The story also highlighted that one wallet move involved labels tied to a New York lawsuit seeking control of bitcoin held across 39,069 dormant addresses under lost-property laws.
The article said that while old-wallet transfers can revive fears that early holders are cashing out, blockchain movement alone cannot confirm whether owners sold, changed wallets, moved to a custodian, or reorganized holdings. Galaxy described 2024 and 2025 as unusually busy years for dormant transfers, and said 2026 is on pace for less than half as much dormant bitcoin movement as last year.
