Japan police investigate 39 kg of bread dumped in national park

Officials said the bread and nearby chicken were not poisoned, and they found no evidence it was tied to animal-camera equipment.

Japan police are investigating who dumped 39 kg, or about 85 lbs, of bread along a roadside in Daisen-Oki National Park in western Japan, where the loaves were left near crash barriers between Aug. 14 and Aug. 20, according to SCMP Economy citing Kyodo.

The incident has triggered online speculation, including fake images and videos, that tried to link the dumping to a reported rise in bear encounters in Japan over the past year. Koji Iwaihara, director of the Natural Parks Foundation’s Tottori branch, said he had questions after hearing the reports.

Investigators initially believed the bread might have been used as bait for cameras streaming live images of animals, but no such equipment was found. The foundation later concluded the bread may have been left to feed animals after 1.3 kg of chicken was found in the same area.

SCMP Economy also reported that bread was found scattered around Tottori Prefecture’s Hakuto coast, though the brand appears different from the loaves in the national park, and neither the bread nor the chicken was poisoned.
