Solana meme coin and OnlyMarms fund six-decade marmot study

CryptoSlate says the Solana meme coin’s creator fees generated more than $150,000 after the National Science Foundation declined renewed funding.

In Gothic, Colorado, biologists have spent more than six decades studying a yellow-bellied marmot population through repeated annual trapping, sampling, ear-tag checks, temporary back markings, and release back into mountain meadows, building one of the longest individually identified wild mammal records in the world, according to CryptoSlate.

That record faced a near interruption after the National Science Foundation declined the team’s latest request for continued support, leaving researchers unable to simply restart the work with the same continuity of observation.

To keep the project going, UCLA professor Daniel Blumstein proposed a G-rated OnlyFans-style fundraising effort dubbed OnlyMarms, and an independent group of crypto traders later created a Solana meme coin, whose creator fees have generated more than $150,000 for the research project, CryptoSlate reported.

The underlying science is tied to long-term, repeatable tracking across generations, including a 2025 study that used a pedigree spanning 11 generations and 2,196 animals to examine whether warning behavior can be inherited, alongside other work on early hardship, longevity, social behavior, survival, and how the marmot responds to warmer temperatures and erratic snowfall, the outlet added.
