Trump plays down fears of a Russian attack on NATO nations
Trump said he is not concerned after talks with Putin, as US and European security officials watch for potential pressure tests of NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense commitment.
OilPrice reports that US President Donald Trump said he does not believe Moscow will attack a NATO nation amid growing concerns in the US media about whether Russian President Vladimir Putin could target a Baltic country or another alliance member to test Western resolve.
According to OilPrice, Trump made the remarks on August 27 in the Oval Office after saying he had “good talks” with Putin, adding that he is “not going to be attacking a NATO territory.” The report says he did not specify when those talks were held.
OilPrice also notes that the Kremlin dismissed similar claims as “scare stories,” coming alongside reports of a surprise visit to Moscow by the CIA director.
The outlet ties the stakes to NATO’s mutual defense clause, Article 5, which states that an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all, while the report says some Western leaders have expressed concerns about Trump’s consistency on NATO support.
