Ukraine drone strike sparks fire at Russia’s Slavneft-YANOS refinery
The Slavneft-YANOS site can process about 300,000 barrels per day, and Ukraine said it is targeting refining capacity to worsen Russia’s domestic gasoline and diesel crunch.
Ukraine’s forces struck the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Yaroslavl, Russia, early on Friday, causing a fire at the facility, according to the Ukrainian General Staff as reported by OilPrice.
The Slavneft-YANOS refinery is one of Russia’s largest, with processing capacity of about 15 million tons of oil per year, roughly 300,000 barrels per day. It produces gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, fuel oil, bitumen, lubricants, and other petroleum products.
OilPrice reported that Ukraine has targeted the refinery several times in recent years, saying its fuels help supply the Russian army. The drone attack was described as part of a wider push to hit Russian refining infrastructure.
OilPrice also noted that Ukraine hit the 180,000-barrels-per-day Afipsky refinery earlier this week in Russia’s Krasnodar region, owned by privately held ForteInvest. Russia has faced a gasoline and diesel crunch since the spring, after Ukraine intensified drone attacks aimed at disrupting fuel supply to the front lines and within Russia.
