US envoy’s remark on Kashmir as part of India triggers diplomatic tremor

The comments came during the first US ambassador visit to Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in six years.

Seven words from a US envoy about Kashmir being part of India have sparked a diplomatic reaction across South Asia, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reports that Sergio Gor told reporters on August 19, during what was the first visit by a US ambassador to Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in six years, “This is an important part of India.”

SCMP Economy adds that India administers the populous central and southern Kashmir valley, while Pakistan controls a western portion of the region known as Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
