North Korea reshuffles military leadership, replacing defence minister

State media said Kim Jong-un approved the changes after a Saturday meeting, and the new defence minister was named from the General Political Bureau.

North Korea has dismissed its defence minister, as state media reported a broader reshuffle of senior military leadership following a meeting led by Kim Jong-un, according to KCNA as carried by SCMP Economy. SCMP Economy reports that No Kwang-chol was removed from the defence minister role and demoted in ruling party leadership to first vice-director of the Munitions Industry Department. Kim Song-gi, director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People’s Army, was named as the new defence minister. Another senior official, defence adviser Pak Jong-chon, was appointed vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and added to the ruling party’s Political Bureau, with additional promotions also announced. Separately, KCNA said Kim praised scientists, researchers and officials at a ceremony on Saturday for advances in defence technology, awarding top national honours.
