Asean urged to coordinate Big Tech crackdown after Meta settlement
Meta’s US$18 billion US settlement prompted calls for an Asean-level framework on removing scam ads, fake accounts, and harmful content, rather than relying on country-by-country enforcement.
Calls are growing for Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries to coordinate a crackdown on Big Tech platforms that spread scams and harmful content, following Meta Platforms’ landmark US settlement.
According to SCMP Economy, Meta agreed to sweeping changes to Instagram and Facebook as part of a US$18 billion settlement with several US states, including default time limits and content restrictions tied to allegations that the platforms harmed children’s mental health.
SCMP Economy also reports that Scam Watch Pilipinas urged the Philippines, as this year’s Asean chair, to put platform accountability on the bloc’s agenda, arguing individual countries often face limited enforcement reach and that cooperation depends on each platform’s willingness.
Analysts speaking to This Week in Asia, as cited by SCMP Economy, said the US settlement strengthens the argument for Southeast Asian governments to seek comparable safeguards, while warning the region may not be able to copy the US approach wholesale.
