Colombia kills dissident leader tied to drone and explosives attacks

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said the operation was aimed at dismantling the networks of the “Ivan Mordisco” faction and that further offensives will continue against illegal armed groups.

Colombia’s President Abelardo de la Espriella said a key leader of dissident factions linked to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia was killed during a military operation on Sunday.

The president identified the man as “Felipe” or “Arcadio,” and said the death dealt a “crushing blow” to the dissident group led by “Ivan Mordisco,” adding that authorities were “closing the net” on Mordisco and his networks.

De la Espriella said the slain leader was responsible for multiple attacks on police stations in Valle del Cauca, including attacks using explosives dropped from drones. He also said the leader commanded a unit in the Jaime Martinez faction and was involved in actions such as planting explosives-laden gas cylinders on roads, attacking a military unit, torching cars, and engaging in extortion.

The president said the video he posted on social media appeared to show a person in a body bag and weapons and ammunition seized during the operation, and he warned that any criminal who does not surrender will end up in a body bag.
