Spain says Russia and Israel spread disinformation tied to Ceuta surge

More than 72,000 migrants crossed irregularly from Morocco into Ceuta between July 30 and 31, with at least 100 deaths reported by local authorities.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said there were signs Russian and Israeli networks helped spread disinformation about Spain’s migration policy ahead of a last month surge of migrants into Ceuta, according to SCMP Economy citing Reuters. Sanchez said there was no evidence of Moroccan involvement.

Sanchez also pointed to research by the EU’s diplomatic service, the EEAS, indicating Russian and Israeli networks were behind the spread of misleading claims in conjunction with far-right networks.

Spanish authorities had warned that social media videos falsely suggested migrants who reached Ceuta by sea could stay in Spain, a message that encouraged thousands to attempt the crossing.

The July 30 to 31 period saw over 72,000 irregular crossings from Morocco into the Spanish territory, which has one of the EU’s only two land borders with Africa, and Ceuta’s local authorities said at least 100 people died in the attempt.
