Tech leaders urge a defensive push against AI-driven cyberattacks
The joint letter warns that AI-enabled cyberattacks are likely to spread in the coming months as models become more capable, with government and industry asked to act quickly.
Major technology companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon are calling for a society-wide defensive effort to address what they describe as an impending wave of AI-driven hacks, according to a joint letter issued Thursday.
The letter, signed by more than 100 organizations including Broadcom, Capital One, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, General Motors, IBM, Mastercard, Oracle, Robinhood, Shopify, and Visa, says there is limited time to make the digital world much more secure before AI-enabled attacks become more widespread.
The companies urged government and industry leaders to bring their technology, resources, and expertise to the effort, warning that in the coming months AI-enabled cyberattacks could accelerate as AI models around the world become increasingly capable.
Insurance Journal reports the U.S. cyberdefense agency CISA and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and it notes concerns that staffing at CISA fell by about a third last year after deep cuts by the Trump administration. It also cites a June warning from the Five Eyes intelligence alliance that the AI revolution is poised to fundamentally transform cybersecurity.
