U.S. Army to spend up to $2.2B on nuclear microreactors by 2028
The Janus Program targets deployment of 20 microreactors across five U.S. military bases, with reactors designed to operate for years without refueling.
The U.S. Army has unveiled the Janus Program, an initiative aimed at supplying portable nuclear microreactors to military bases by 2028, according to OilPrice.
The smaller reactors are designed to generate about 1 to 20 megawatts of electricity each, and the program is intended to reduce the need to transport fossil fuels to remote or frontline locations, since localized nuclear power can run for years without refueling.
OilPrice reports the Army has awarded up to $2.2 billion over five years to private and public companies to build, own, and operate commercial nuclear microreactors at five domestic bases.
Five vendors have already been selected for specific installations, including Antares Nuclear at Fort Bragg, BWXT Technologies at Fort Campbell, General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems at Fort Hood, Radiant Industries at Fort Benning, and Westinghouse Government Services at Fort Drum, with an estimate of 20 microreactors deployed under the plan.
