Andy Burnham to urge public control of services to boost UK growth

Andy Burnham will tell UK MPs in the House of Commons that expanding public control over essential services is the only way to improve growth across the country, the Guardian Business reported.

Burnham, who took over as prime minister in July, will address MPs from the frontbench for the first time in 16 years, less than two months into his term after spending the summer recess announcing policies to be taken before Parliament.

The outlet said the prime minister will argue that the cost of everyday services is holding back the economy and will promise a plan to regain control of those costs.

The Guardian Business also noted he is expected to face early legislative decisions related to taking utilities such as Thames Water into government ownership, alongside possible changes to the immigration bill and debate over electoral reform and North Sea drilling.
