Arini Capital’s US investment chief Gavin Yates exits hedge fund

The departures come after Arini lost about 8% in July, following credit positions that moved against the firm.

Arini Capital Management said its head of US investments, Gavin Yates, has left the credit-focused hedge fund, according to a report by Bloomberg cited by Hedgeweek. Yates joined Arini in 2021, moved from London to New York in 2024, and also served as head of the firm’s New York office.

Hedgeweek also reported that Ben Elliott, another member of Arini’s investment team, departed earlier this year. The changes add to other senior exits, including the firm’s first chief risk officer, James Howard, who left several months ago for another role.

The leadership shift follows a difficult stretch for performance. Hedgeweek cited that Arini lost about 8% in July after several credit positions moved against it, including bets linked to Aston Martin Lagonda and credit default swaps used to provide protection on Virgin Media debt.

Arini is led by Hamza Lemssouguer, whose approach relies on large, concentrated positions that can deliver sharp gains but also significant drawdowns, Hedgeweek said. The firm has grown rapidly since launch and now manages about $21bn in assets, after initially being backed by investors including Squarepoint Capital, a partnership that has since ended.
