China coking coal prices surge 46% in August amid supply squeeze
Coking coal futures on China’s Dalian exchange were up about 6% Monday afternoon local time, and steelmakers in India face margin pressure as input costs rise.
Chinese coking coal prices have surged, with the key steelmaking raw material set for a record 46% jump in August alone as supply tightens, OilPrice reports. Coking coal futures on China’s Dalian exchange were rising by 6% Monday afternoon local time, according to the outlet, driven by persistent supply issues after a mining disaster in May and increased safety checks on other mines.
Bloomberg data cited by OilPrice shows August’s rally is on track to be the biggest monthly increase since Dalian coking coal futures began trading in 2013. The previous record monthly gain was 38% in July 2025, the outlet added, with August’s move eclipsing that benchmark.
The surge is also spreading beyond China, with India’s steel industry seeing margin pressure from higher input prices. OilPrice says India imports as much as 95% of its coking coal, and it notes that the premium coking coal freight on board in Australia rose 25% in the first seven months of the year versus the prior year due to supply disruptions.
