Explosives damage power lines near Germany coal plant
The attack targeted the Preilack substation, briefly interrupting electricity supply about 100 km southeast of Berlin, and the operator said it is investigating a potential link to a unit technical failure.
Improvised explosive devices damaged power lines near a coal-fired power plant in eastern Germany, police and the grid operator said. The incident led to a brief electricity disruption, according to the reports, with the area about 100 km southeast of Berlin.
The devices were found around 8:00 a.m. at the Preilack substation, which distributes power from the nearby Jaenschwalde plant that runs on lignite and also burns waste, a police spokeswoman said. At least one device detonated, while others failed to go off, and authorities said no one was hurt and there was no major blackout.
LEAG, the power plant operator, said an attack was carried out on the Preilack substation through which electricity generated at Jaenschwalde is fed into the grid. LEAG also said there was a technical failure in a unit at the plant and that it is investigating whether it is connected to the incident.
Germany's 50 Hertz grid operator said unidentified perpetrators damaged several lines in its grid. According to the reports, investigators are looking into the cause and possible connections between the sabotage and the plant's equipment issue.
