Howden Re names Filipe Duarte head of Portugal operation
Duarte started the newly created role on 2 August 2026 in Lisbon, giving Howden Re its first permanent presence in Portugal.
Howden Re, part of Howden Group’s reinsurance, capital markets, and strategic advisory business, has appointed Filipe Duarte as Head of Howden Re Portugal, expanding its presence in Iberia. Duarte took up the role on 2 August 2026 and is based in Lisbon, creating a permanent Portugal base for the firm for the first time.
The company said Duarte brings more than 16 years of insurance experience, including over 12 years in reinsurance. Before joining Howden Re, he was Head of Treaties at Aon Reinsurance, advising insurers and arranging reinsurance programmes across Portugal, with experience spanning both treaty and facultative reinsurance and advisory work on complex solutions.
Howden Re said the appointment supports its plans to develop business in Portugal and expects to add further experienced professionals to the local operation. It added that Portuguese insurers are facing changing catastrophe and reinsurance considerations.
The move comes as Portugal experienced severe weather in early 2026, with a succession of storms led by Storm Kristin during the first quarter. Howden Re said the events underscore the need to understand secondary perils and use more sophisticated catastrophe modelling, and it pointed to development of Portugal’s Natural Catastrophe Pool as an area where its international reinsurance expertise could contribute.
