Hut 8 power leases in Texas could support Anthropic computing deal
The Beacon Point leases total 704 megawatts and carry $19.6 billion in contracted value, with Kite 8 not disclosing how much is linked to the $35 billion Anthropic contract.
Hut 8’s Beacon Point campus in Texas sits within a broader push to secure large scale power and computing infrastructure for AI, as Anthropic agreed to spend $35 billion on Nvidia-backed computing capacity through Lambda, according to CoinDesk.
Hut 8’s two 15-year Beacon Point leases cover 704 megawatts of IT capacity with a contracted value of $19.6 billion over the initial terms, and CoinDesk reports some capacity is expected to route through the campus in Nueces County. The facilities are connected to access to up to 1 gigawatt of power, with an existing grid connection, which can help shorten the timeline versus building new data center power from scratch.
CoinDesk reports that Hut 8 has not confirmed how much of the 704 megawatts is tied to the Anthropic-Lambda arrangement. The outlet also notes that Hut 8 has previously disclosed the leases without naming a tenant, and CoinDesk has asked whether Nvidia is the previously undisclosed party behind both leases, and how much capacity is associated with the new AI deal.
The report adds that Bitcoin miners increasingly seek to repurpose or align their large data center footprints for AI workloads because major sites, abundant power, and grid connections can address AI developers’ growing demand for computing capacity. CoinDesk cites other miners that spent years securing power for bitcoin mining and says miners have already signed more than $70 billion for AI and high-performance computing initiatives.
