Sberbank expects $46.4B crypto trading volume in first year of rollout

Sberbank says trading volume could rise to 7.5 trillion rubles, or $87.1 billion, by 2029, and the bank is also planning to accept bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as loan collateral.

Russia’s Sberbank expects trading volume tied to its new crypto rollout to reach 4 trillion rubles, or about $46.4 billion, in the first year, according to statements carried by TASS and summarized by Bitcoin Magazine.

The bank’s deputy chairman of the executive board, Anatoly Popov, also projected volume could climb to 7.5 trillion rubles, or about $87.1 billion, by 2029, and the forecast was described as conservative in the report.

Sberbank said it plans to launch a Bitcoin and crypto wallet and digital asset custody by December, and it is looking to accept bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as collateral for loans, TASS reported.

The article also points to Russia’s accelerating regulatory moves, including draft crypto trading rules from the Bank of Russia, preparation by the State Duma for broader digital asset regulation, and a law signed by President Vladimir Putin that allows only registered entities to operate as exchanges and limits how much crypto retail investors can use. Using crypto as payment or legal tender remains banned, with the ban on crypto payments in effect since 2022, the article says.
