REMAX co-founder Gail Liniger dies after nearly 30 years as CEO

REMAX co-founder Gail Liniger has died, according to HousingWire, where industry leaders credited her with shaping the brand’s culture and advancing its “maximum commission model.”

HousingWire reports Liniger was hired by Dave Liniger as REMAX’s first employee in 1971, after which the pair founded the company in 1973. She was promoted to vice president in 1978, became president in 1979, and took over as CEO in 1991, a role she held for nearly 30 years.

Under her leadership, HousingWire says REMAX expanded to include roughly 145,000 agents across more than 120 countries and territories. The outlet also notes that the Linigers helped pioneer the maximum commission model, which let agents keep the vast majority of their commission rather than splitting it more evenly with their broker.

HousingWire adds that the commission model emphasized high-producing agents, commission splits, and entrepreneurial independence, which the outlet says influenced later brokerage approaches across the industry.
