Sony and Warner Music sue Anthropic over alleged song use in AI training
The publishers are seeking damages of up to $150,000 per allegedly infringed work and want a court order stopping Anthropic from using their material for training.
Sony Music and Warner Music publishing companies have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic in California federal court, alleging the AI developer improperly used copyrighted song lyrics and sheet music to train its Claude models.
According to the complaint filed Friday, the publishers say Anthropic “pirated” hundreds of lyrics and sheet music linked to artists including The Beatles, Taylor Swift, and Michael Jackson, and that Claude can reproduce copyrighted lyrics verbatim when prompted. The case is described as part of a broader wave of copyright lawsuits targeting tech companies over AI training practices.
The lawsuit follows other litigation involving Anthropic. Universal Music Group sued Anthropic in 2023, and Anthropic previously became the first AI company to settle one of the disputes, paying $1.5 billion to resolve a class action brought by a group of authors.
Sony and Warner are asking for damages of up to $150,000 per infringed copyright and seek a court order barring Anthropic from using their works. An Anthropic spokesperson said the company will defend itself robustly, arguing AI training amounts to fair use and referencing a judge’s approach in the authors’ case.
