SpaceX plans first AI satellites to launch in Q4 2027
SpaceX expects the network to reach scale in 2028, aiming to support heavy AI workloads from orbit using Nvidia chips.
SpaceX has set a launch date for its planned AI data centers in orbit, with CEO Elon Musk saying the first AI satellites will begin launching in the final quarter of 2027.
Each satellite is designed to operate like a space-based data center, and Musk described the approach as simpler, cheaper, denser, and lighter than typical ground server racks. SpaceX also said the effort is powered by Nvidia chips, with Nvidia identified as the exclusive chip supplier.
Musk expects the overall network to reach real scale in 2028, and SpaceX has previously outlined an ambition to fly up to 1 million of these satellites. The company is also positioning itself against other orbital data center startups, including Starcloud.
A key challenge for competitors is access to launch capacity, since SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rideshare slots are expected to dry up beyond late 2028 as the company prioritizes Starship.
