Well Go USA to release Dear You in North American cinemas Sept. 4

The Teochew-language family drama has grossed nearly US$300 million in mainland China before its Sept. 4 North America debut.

China’s biggest box-office surprise this year, Dear You, is set for a North American theatrical release on September 4, with its distributors betting that themes of migration, family, and intergenerational care can translate across language and culture.

The film is a Teochew-language family drama that has already become a hit in Southeast Asia, and it has grossed nearly US$300 million in mainland China, according to SCMP Economy.

Well Go USA, a Texas-based, family-owned distributor focused on bringing Asian cinema to North American audiences, is responsible for the September 4 release.

Other market observers have been sceptical about whether a Chinese film rooted in regional language and experience can find broad appeal in the US market.
