AI in insurance should automate administration, not replace underwriters

Cytora strategist Tatum Fish argues insurers should focus AI on reducing rekeying and systems work so underwriters spend more time reviewing risk.

Insurance is undergoing a generational shift as AI adoption accelerates, but Cytora strategic value architect Tatum Fish says the most effective use cases are aimed at clearing the administrative work that sits in front of underwriters.

Fish, speaking to Insurance Business, said AI deployments should not be designed to replace underwriting expertise. Instead, the goal should be automating tasks like moving information between systems, reading documents, and rekeying data, particularly in specialty and commercial lines where skilled staff often spend hours on these steps.

As an example of administrative automation, Fish pointed to Applied Systems’ email to quote tool, which aggregates submissions arriving via email, phone calls, texts, and carrier portals so underwriters can focus on reviewing risk rather than keying it in.

Fish also emphasized that successful insurer and insurtech partnerships require connecting technology to a specific business problem, involving the people who do the work, and avoiding assumptions that either side does not understand the underlying process or that new tools will work out of the box without co-design.
