Carney urges US to get serious as US-Canada trade fight escalates
Carney said trade talks could resume if Washington drops its attacks, after US actions included renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” following the collapse of talks on August 21.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday urged the Trump administration to stop what he described as inflammatory behavior as the US-Canada trade dispute intensified. In comments covered by SCMP Economy, Carney told the US to end “memes” and “shade” and to begin serious negotiations rather than undermining industry. Carney said US-Canada talks could restart if Washington became serious about discussions, adding that the terms being pursued by the United States could leave Canadian industries “gradually wound down” and “wiped out.” He argued the approach was not constructive, framing it as part of the US political environment.
The remarks came after a new round of backlash from Washington following the collapse of trade talks on August 21. SCMP Economy reported that the US included a move to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” along with social media posts targeting Canadian cadets.
SCMP Economy also noted that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Canada could not respond “tit-for-tat” to the larger US economy, and that US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth posted a mocking image involving female cadets in British Columbia. Carney called the post “beneath their office.”
