US-Canada trade war opens new lesson for China and other partners
Analysts say the Washington-Ottawa breakdown could encourage other countries to adopt a tougher stance in response to US retaliation, while raising new risks for Beijing.
South China Morning Post reports that the latest US-Canada trade war is being viewed as a turning point for China and other major US trading partners, with analysts and former trade officials pointing to both lessons and risks.
The outlet frames the dispute as a new front in President Donald Trump’s disruptive approach to global institutions, arguing it could spur backlash and further distrust, with potential upside for Beijing.
Wendy Cutler, senior vice-president at the Asia Society Policy Institute, said that if Canada can withstand US retaliation while defending its national interests, other countries may follow a similar “get tough” approach.
Cutler also suggested China may be watching the back-and-forth between Washington and Ottawa, noting that Beijing could benefit from the widening rift.
