Commercial P/C talent pipeline still faces readiness gap

A new review five years after earlier research says growth in insurance education does not confirm that new entrants reach underwriting readiness.

Insurance Journal examines whether the commercial property and casualty insurance industry has fixed a talent vulnerability identified in doctoral research completed about five years ago.

The piece says the issue is less about whether insurers know how to develop underwriters, and more about whether the talent system is changing enough to produce practitioners who are ready for underwriting responsibility, especially as work arrangements shift.

It notes that insurance-related academic programs are active and some show enrollment growth, and that some organizations are paying explicit attention to development and succession, including tracking expected time-to-readiness rather than just whether a successor has been named.

The outlet also describes deliberate efforts in some organizations to structure early-career developmental exposure to experienced colleagues, brokers, field activities, and workshops, while cautioning that this is not necessarily happening everywhere and that evidence of effectiveness is not guaranteed.
