Longer horizontal wells raise Permian crude and gas output

Operators are extending well length, including super-laterals over 15,000 feet, to boost production in the Permian.

The US Energy Information Administration says well operators in the Permian region of western Texas and eastern New Mexico are increasing oil and natural gas production by drilling longer horizontal wells.

According to EIA, companies are also making greater use of so-called super-lateral wells that exceed 15,000 feet, a technique intended to expand the amount of producing rock reached by each well.
