Two sailors die after attack on Saudi oil tanker in Strait of Hormuz
Saudi Arabia formally accused Iran of targeting a Bahri-owned tanker, after Iran launched missiles and drones at U.S. bases across the region.
Two sailors died following Monday’s attack on a Saudi oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, according to OilPrice. Riyadh has formally accused Iran of targeting the Bahri-owned Sidr after Tehran began a new wave of missile and drone strikes against U.S. bases in the region.
Bahri confirmed Wednesday that two Filipino crew members were killed in the attack. The Sidr was hit near Oman late Monday as it attempted to leave the Persian Gulf, after UK Maritime Trade Operations initially reported the tanker had been struck by three unknown projectiles with no casualties at the time.
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry condemned Iran for targeting the tanker and reiterated its rejection of attacks that threaten “the security and safety of maritime navigation and global energy supplies.” The report says Riyadh has not threatened military retaliation, but the deaths aboard the Sidr raise the stakes for Saudi Arabia.
OilPrice also said Iran is accused of killing crew aboard a tanker operated by Saudi Arabia’s state shipping company as U.S. and Iranian forces exchange strikes across the Gulf. It added that Iran launched missiles and drones against U.S. military facilities in Iraq, Kuwait, and the UAE on Wednesday, following U.S. strikes a day earlier.
