UN report warns global warming will exceed 1.5°C soon
The UNEP analysis finds warming will cross 1.5°C within the next decade in all modeled scenarios, even under an optimistic pledge outlook.
A new UN Environment Programme report warns that global temperatures are on track to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels within the next few years.
According to OilPrice citing the UNEP findings, even the most optimistic pathway that assumes current government climate pledges are fully implemented would still put expected peak warming at 1.8°C, while the Paris Agreement goal of limiting warming below 1.5°C would not be met.
The report also projects that under current policies the median rise by 2100 would be about 2.6°C, with a range from 1.9°C to 3.6°C, and says central estimates indicate the 1.5°C threshold will be crossed within the next decade.
The UN said the impacts of a 1.5°C warmer world are already dangerous and pointed to recent extreme weather including scorching heat, wildfires, and deadly floods, urging faster greenhouse gas cuts to limit how large and how long any overshoot lasts.
