US extends Middle East troop deployment timelines through 2027
The US maintains about 50,000 troops in the region, with missions including intercepting Iranian missiles and escorting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Wall Street Journal reported that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is extending troop deployment timelines across the Middle East through 2027, suggesting the conflict could last longer than current plans.
The report said the United States currently maintains around 50,000 troops in the Middle East, including 19 warships, two aircraft carriers, and 13 guided missile destroyers, giving President Donald Trump options to escalate if needed.
Current missions include intercepting Iranian missiles, escorting commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and blockading Iranian ports and coastal regions.
At the time of writing, West Texas Intermediate crude was up 0.28% on the day to $89.40.
