US Mint launches Trump portrait $1 coin for 250th anniversary
The commemorative coin costs $61 for a roll of 25 and contains no actual gold, made from 88.5% copper and other metals.
BBC Business reports the US Mint has launched a commemorative $1 coin featuring Donald Trump’s portrait, marking the first time a living president has appeared on US currency in about a century.
The coin was released to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and carries the words “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The US Mint says the design is meant to capture the spirit and legacy of a nation approaching its landmark milestone.
The commemorative coins are priced at $61 for a roll of 25 and $154.50 for a bag of 100. The outlet reports they were not listed in stock on the US Mint website within hours of going on sale, though they are also sold via vending machines at the US Mint store in Washington, DC.
BBC Business adds that despite its golden color, the coin does not contain actual gold, according to the US Mint. The composition is 88.5% copper, with the rest made up of zinc, manganese and nickel, and the article discusses how federal law prohibiting living portraits applies differently to coins versus notes.
