Vietnam arrests deputy health minister over alleged bribes tied to smuggling probe
Police said the arrest of Deputy Health Minister Tran Van Thuan is linked to an investigation involving alleged smuggling and accounting violations at Viet My Medical Investment Joint Stock Company.
Vietnamese police arrested Deputy Health Minister Tran Van Thuan on Wednesday, accusing him of accepting bribes, according to a statement from the public security ministry, carried by SCMP Economy. Authorities said Thuan, 56, was taken into custody due to alleged bribe acceptance involving a large sum of money, without disclosing the amount. SCMP Economy also reports the arrest comes as part of a broader police investigation tied to alleged smuggling and accounting-regulation violations with serious consequences at Viet My Medical Investment Joint Stock Company.
Thuan was appointed deputy health minister in 2020, and in 2024 he became chairman of Vietnam’s National Medical Council, SCMP Economy said. The case also centers on allegations connected to medical equipment smuggling, as described by authorities.
