Crypto rewards app for cannabis use draws alarm from health experts
Researchers cited by DL News warn that gamifying daily cannabis sessions and boosting points by up to 200% could reinforce habits and raise addiction concerns.
A California cannabis vape pen company that advertises a Bitcoin reward for use is drawing alarm from health experts and anti-drug campaigners, according to DL News.
The company, Gudtrip, says its product is part of a network that combines cannabis, Bitcoin, and artificial intelligence, and that customers can connect a vape pen to an app that awards Bitcoin and points for using the device.
DL News reports that Gudtrip’s “checking-in” model creates streaks that increase points earned by up to 200%, and several researchers say encouraging daily consumption can be dangerous and habit-forming.
In comments to DL News, researchers said linking a reward to each puff can reinforce behavior and potentially raise the risk of escalating use and addiction, while a Gudtrip spokesperson said the company is mindful of risks and that the product is not designed to encourage greater cannabis consumption.
