App rewards cannabis vape pen use with Bitcoin, critics warn

A California cannabis vape pen company, Gudtrip, has drawn scrutiny after it advertised a rewards program that gives customers Bitcoin for using its product, using the tagline, “Every hit earns crypto.” DL News reports the company combines cannabis, Bitcoin, and artificial intelligence in a user-powered network concept.
Customers who buy a Gudtrip vape pen can connect it to an app, which rewards them with Bitcoin and points. The program also relies on daily “checking-in,” with streaks that increase points earned by up to 200%, according to the report.
Several researchers interviewed by DL News said the setup raises ethical and health concerns. They warned that linking a reward to each use can reinforce the behavior, potentially increasing the chance of escalated consumption and addiction.
DL News also reports that Gudtrip says the product is not intended to encourage greater cannabis consumption and that it is mindful of risks associated with cannabis products, while critics argue the incentive structure is inherently problematic.
