EU leaders pledge tougher Russia measures after Leipzig drone attack
Officials said Germany plans to close the Russian consulate in Bonn and end the lease on a Russian cultural center in Berlin following the August 4 to 5 incident.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the drone incident at Leipzig Airport is now the “new normal” and vowed more restrictive measures against Moscow, framing the event as an escalation on European soil.
Von der Leyen spoke on September 2 alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte a day after Germany formally blamed Russia for the August 4 to 5 drone incident. RFE/RL reports that European Union and member states summoned Russian ambassadors in protest over the attack.
The outlet said German authorities also announced on September 1 that they would close the Russian Consulate in Bonn and terminate the lease on a Russian cultural center in Berlin as a result of the attempted attack.
RFE/RL added that France, Belgium, Portugal, and the Netherlands said they were summoning Russian ambassadors over the incident, while the European Union said it would summon Moscow’s representative to Brussels.
