Only 4 of 28 lifts at Queen Mary Hospital block to run normally

Hong Kong authorities said the remaining elevators will need repairs and are expected to stay out of service until late in the year as the HK$13.5 billion hospital block undergoes follow-up work.

Hong Kong’s Architectural Services Department said only four of the 28 lifts in Queen Mary Hospital’s new clinical block are currently in acceptable condition and would be kept operating normally after minor repairs, while the rest require additional work through the end of the year.

Authorities said the elevators serving non-clinical facilities are expected to undergo those minor repairs later, but the remaining lifts showed frequent operational instability and needed urgent follow-up.

The block, part of the Pok Fu Lam hospital’s first-phase redevelopment, was mostly completed last year and began opening in phases last November, but clinical services have not moved in because repeated lift faults have kept most elevators out of operation.

Hong Kong officials said the defects surfaced during final testing, with installation and performance failing to meet contract standards, including incidents in which staff were trapped after sudden drops.
