Norway seizes Russian cruise ship to enforce Naftogaz $4.22B award
The seizure of the vessel Professor Molchanov was ordered by a Norwegian court to secure enforcement of Naftogaz’s arbitral award, including about $4.22 billion plus interest and costs.
Norway has seized a Russian commercial cruise ship off the Svalbard archipelago at the request of Ukrainian oil and gas company Naftogaz as part of efforts to enforce a damages award against Russia.
According to OilPrice, Naftogaz is seeking enforcement of a $4.22 billion arbitral award tied to Russia’s asset expropriation following its annexation of Crimea in 2014.
The article says Naftogaz had previously won a Hague tribunal order in 2023 for Russia to pay more than $5 billion, and that the award was recognized as enforceable in Norway.
OilPrice reports that the vessel Professor Molchanov was seized after a Norwegian court order issued on August 31, 2026, with the seizure intended to secure Russia’s outstanding obligations under the award, plus interest and costs.
