Standard Chartered starts institutional BTC and ETH spot trading in Dubai

The bank is routing spot execution through its existing FX platforms in the UAE and lets clients settle with their custodian, including Standard Chartered’s custody service.

Standard Chartered has begun offering institutional spot trading in bitcoin and ether in the United Arab Emirates through its Dubai International Financial Center branch, positioning the bank as the first global systemically important bank to provide this capability in the market, according to CoinDesk.

The service lets institutional clients trade BTC and ETH via Standard Chartered’s existing foreign exchange platforms and settle through a custodian of their choice, including the bank’s own digital asset custody service.

The launch supports the bank’s broader digital assets strategy across custody, trading, and tokenization capabilities within its Corporate and Investment Bank, and CoinDesk adds that the bank operates a principal trading desk to take the other side of client trades rather than acting only as an intermediary.

CoinDesk also notes that Standard Chartered debuted the same institutional spot trading capability through its UK branch in July 2025, and that its UAE expansion reflects a regulatory framework that is more accommodating than in the US for direct spot execution.
