US Mint Trump gold-coloured coin sells out within hours of Sept. 2
The coin is marketed as a gold collectible but is made from copper and other base metals, not actual gold.
The US Mint launched a new one-dollar, gold-coloured coin featuring President Donald Trump to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, and it sold out within hours after becoming available for public purchase on Sept. 2, according to Mining.com. Trump is the first sitting US president to be featured on a coin while still in office, and the Mint said the 2020 Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act allowed living or deceased individuals to appear on the obverse for the 250th Independence anniversary celebration. While the coin is marketed as a gold coin, the US Mint says it does not contain any gold, using a mix of primarily copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel to produce the gold hue. The Mint also said the coin can be used as legal tender, even though it is marketed as a collectible. The Mint set pricing at $61 for packs of 25, and the coin’s obverse design includes a portrait of Trump with the inscriptions “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and “1776 ~ 2026,” while the reverse shows the presidential seal and “250.” Mining.com also notes it is part of a broader 250th independence program with additional products launching and being sold throughout 2026, including precious metal coins priced across a wide range.
