China pauses approvals for new battery storage factories

The temporary halt applies to plants that have not started construction and is tied to worries about excess capacity in battery storage.

China has paused approvals for new battery storage factory projects as authorities review existing and planned capacity, Cailianshe reported, citing industry sources.

The suspension is focused on plants that have not started construction, according to the report, and comes as concerns about overcapacity mount in battery storage, a sector tied to energy transition demand.

The outlet said the pause reflects broader pressures seen in other energy transition industries as subsidies helped drive rapid growth without enough regard for whether supply would outstrip demand.

It also pointed to prior Chinese moves to curb parts of the EV and solar industries, and to how oversupply and price wars have hurt sector companies, including solar manufacturers that have expanded into battery storage.
