Mayor announces £500,000 package as JLR cuts 4,000 jobs

Jaguar Land Rover is set to cut 4,000 jobs, prompting a response from the Mayor of the West Midlands. The Guardian Economics reports that the mayor announced a £500,000 rapid-response package for workers facing redundancy from the company’s announcement.
The package is designed to help find new jobs for affected workers, and to retain advanced manufacturing and automotive skills within the West Midlands regional economy. The mayor also said the emergency support could be bolstered by assistance from the Department for Work and Pensions.
In remarks cited by Guardian Economics, Mayor Richard Parker described the news as deeply worrying for workers and families in the region. He said JLR is important to the area and noted the company has faced a difficult period, citing a cyber attack last year, the impact of the war in the Middle East, and continuing instability tied to global tariffs and trade.
