Swiss Re CEO says it will keep playing a meaningful role in alternative capital
Swiss Re said it expects more reinsurance demand from both insurers and the public sector as exposures and risks grow.
Swiss Re CEO Urs Baertschi said the reinsurer expects to remain a meaningful participant in the alternative capital market through its Alternative Capital Partners, or ACP, division at Swiss Re’s RVS 2026 briefing in Monte Carlo.
Baertschi tied that outlook to the need for a strong reinsurance capital base to support rising demand, citing increased exposures, higher values, and new risks, while emphasizing that reinsurers need to take out volatility to help insurers offer coverage more cost efficiently to end customers.
He said more than 80% of Swiss Re’s capital comes from traditional reinsurance capital, with the remainder coming from alternative capital, and he reiterated Swiss Re’s role as a long time participant in the insurance-linked securities and ILS space.
Earlier this year, Swiss Re launched a new Alternative Capital Solutions unit to encompass its ILS and retrocessional hedging and execution activities, with the unit operating under the ACP division.
