NHTSA opens audit into nearly 1,000 Tesla Cybercabs

The agency will examine Tesla’s certification basis for the Cybercab, including which Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards it treated as not applicable.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an audit into about 1,000 Tesla Cybercab vehicles, focusing on the processes and technical data Tesla used to claim compliance with federal vehicle safety standards, according to Insurance Journal.

NHTSA said the Cybercab does not have permanently attached conventional manual controls, including a steering wheel, brake pedal, accelerator pedal, and mirrors, and the agency will assess Tesla’s certification basis and related issues.

The probe follows Tesla’s start of commercial deployment of a small number of the two-seater Cybercab in Austin, Texas, with the company planning to gradually expand the service to more vehicles and locations, Insurance Journal said.

Tesla had 420 autonomous vehicles registered in Texas as of Friday morning, state records show, including 45 Cybercab vehicles, the outlet reported.
