Saudi Aramco Jizan refinery hit again as Houthi attacks escalate

The 400,000-barrel-per-day facility is a key Red Sea refining hub, and exports reportedly fell sharply after the prior attack, with no exports recorded in August.

Saudi Aramco’s Jizan refinery, a 400,000-barrel-per-day operation, was hit in a new attack on Monday, raising risks to a major refining hub on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, OilPrice reported.

According to OilPrice, the Financial Times cited two people with knowledge of the incident, who said the strike was similar in scale to an attack last month that temporarily disrupted operations. OilPrice said Saudi Aramco had not commented on the latest damage and no group has been confirmed as responsible.

Jizan has become a repeated target since fighting between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis resumed this summer, OilPrice reported. The Houthis attacked Aramco facilities in Jizan and Yanbu in July, and struck Jizan again in August.

OilPrice added that the refinery’s location has grown more important as the war with Iran disrupted exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia has routed more crude west via an East-West pipeline toward Yanbu, while OilPrice said Financial Times reporting indicated oil shipments from Jizan have fallen sharply since the previous attack, with no exports recorded in August.
