Solana payment-channel design raises risk of unpaid merchants after delivery

Solana Foundation’s Sept. 3 payment-channel announcement ties high throughput to whether vouchers can be recovered before a recovery window closes, including when an operator restarts.

Solana Foundation’s announced payment-channel system, marketed around “more than one million payments per second,” is also built on an interval in which different parties finance different parts of the process, creating potential timing and recovery risk if an operator stops responding, according to CryptoSlate.

In the described setup, a customer funds a channel with a prepaid ceiling, a merchant supplies services, and an operator runs the payment process. If a customer stops buying before the channel finishes paying, the customer needs a way to recover remaining deposits, while the merchant needs its final bill to still be able to reach the blockchain before a recovery window closes.

The Foundation-linked benchmark template highlights that restarting a default in-memory store can forfeit vouchers accepted but not yet settled. The template reports about 1.09 million verified vouchers per second on a 128-core AVX-512 host during a sustained 10-minute run, but CryptoSlate notes this result measures a payment gate returning a response, not independently settled mainnet transactions or end-to-end AI completions.

CryptoSlate also says the benchmark describes a test workload rather than measured commercial demand, and that a deployment with durable session storage should be benchmarked separately because durable writes become part of the request path. The article describes how payment channels rely on on-chain programs to hold customer-deposited escrow and enforce balances, but the operator and recoverability details can determine whether a merchant ultimately collects.
