Vitalik Buterin rejects AI-driven Bitcoin crash prediction

Buterin said his current crypto holdings effectively amount to a wager, with about 90% of his net worth exposed to the bet.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin pushed back on warnings that artificial intelligence could spark a sharp Bitcoin selloff, arguing that long term cybersecurity should improve and that the main challenge would be managing the transition rather than a fundamental break to Bitcoin itself, according to CryptoSlate.

The debate followed Silicon Valley investor and AI-risk commentator Liron Shapiro, who said he assigns a 50% probability that Bitcoin could fall more than 50% within two years because AI could weaken what investors view as the network’s security and robustness guarantees.

Buterin argued that Bitcoin should be able to withstand certain security failures that do not require social consensus, including attacks aimed at clients, mining pools, and other infrastructure components, and he placed a very low probability on AI producing a break in Bitcoin’s hashing functions or its proof-of-work system.

He also said he would normally offer Shapiro a wager, but his existing crypto holdings already create the equivalent of a bet, adding that his view extends to Ethereum. CryptoSlate notes an example of AI assisted pressure on crypto infrastructure, citing that in August Bitcoin swap provider Boltz suspended its service after AI aided probing produced contained exploits and the team decided it could no longer safely run the system.
