AI-driven bug hunting leaves Bitcoin off-chain layers exposed

Recent incidents include about $114 million drained from Coldcard wallets and around 4,000 BTC withdrawn from Blockstream’s Liquid Network before a patch.

CoinDesk reports that a run of security incidents involving Coldcard, Core Lightning, and Blockstream’s Liquid Network has exposed vulnerabilities across parts of Bitcoin’s infrastructure, putting large sums at risk.

The outlet attributes the heightened risk in part to Bitcoin’s move toward greater utility, including smart contract features and faster off-chain transactions, which can increase the complexity of code in scaling layers compared with the main layer’s intentionally simple design.

CoinDesk says attackers drained roughly $114 million in bitcoin from Coldcard wallets, and that Core Lightning developers issued an emergency response after AI-generated security reports surfaced real vulnerabilities.

Most recently, white-hat hackers exploited Blockstream’s Liquid Network, withdrawing about 4,000 BTC, or $317 million, before returning 3,400 BTC after the vulnerability was patched, while CoinDesk notes that a separate effort in August used AI models to scan 390 Bitcoin projects and generate nearly 5,000 findings.
